Stereo Test for Speakers & Headphones

Left Right Sound Test

Check that your left and right speakers or earbuds are working and the right way round — channel beeps, an alternating stereo test, a quick left/right quiz and a balance check.

Left and Right should beep only on that side. Alternate should bounce cleanly left → right → left.

Left / right quiz

Not sure which side is which? 6 rounds of beeps play on a random side — pick where you heard them. You’ll get a verdict on whether your channels are correct, swapped, mono or silent.

Balance check

Play the tone and move the slider until it sounds exactly in the middle of your head (or between your speakers). If you have to move it away from centre, one side is weaker.

LeftRight

Balanced — both sides sound equally loud.

⚠️ Start at a low volume — especially with headphones.

How to use the left right sound test

  1. Turn the volume down, then put on your headphones or sit centred between your speakers.
  2. Press Left, then Right. The beeps should come only from that side. Short beeps are easier to place than a steady tone.
  3. Press Alternate. The beeps bounce left → right → left; each one should jump fully to its side.
  4. Take the quiz if you are unsure. Six rounds of beeps play on a random side; you pick where you heard them, and the page tells you whether your channels are correct, swapped, mono or silent.
  5. Run the balance check. Move the slider until the tone sounds centred. If that means moving it away from the middle, the readout shows how much weaker one side is.

Stereo test: why left and right matter

Almost everything you listen to is mixed in stereo. Music places instruments across the left–right field, films pan dialogue and effects, and games use left/right cues so you can hear where footsteps or gunfire come from. If the channels are swapped, mixed to mono or unbalanced, sound comes from the wrong place — or loses its sense of space altogether.

A quick stereo test catches these problems in seconds and works for any setup: desktop speakers, studio monitors, a TV or soundbar connected to a computer, wired headphones, earbuds and AirPods. For a deeper check of your headphones — stereo imaging, frequency response and polarity — use the headphone test.

Where to find balance and mono settings

Channels fine? Check the rest of your system with the sound test (frequency sweep and polarity), the bass test for low-end, or play an exact frequency on one side with the tone generator.
